THE NEW BUMPERS JAZZ BAND, JCD-344
Date Posted: 2005-01-27
It took only four years for Fred Dupin and the New Bumpers to make their dream come true.
But lets come back up to 1969, the birthyear of our future trumpet and cornet player who quickly revealed himself ardent and full of good ideas .Since he was always reared with music and the sound of his father’s trumpet. After holding a National Conservatoire diploma, still as a teenager, he wandered from band to band, from musical adventure to musical adventure. Throughout France.
One day he decided to organize his own project, at a time when jazz his starting to enter his life, and finally took a crucial place in it. Without even suspecting what this would lead him to, he founded a band that would allow him to explore the depths of traditional jazz and swing.
He called his band the New Bumpers Dixieland Jazz band. This happened in 2000, in a French city, Bordeaux. Everything then went so fast!! And always thanks to Fred Dupin`s overflowing energy! Little by little ensemble would manage to earn a good reputation in its own country. Their rich repertoire is often renewed by Fred himself; his sparkling arrangements are remarkable. Beside the audience is fond of his style halfway between Ernie Carson and Sidney de Paris, and his skillful mute shows. The band’s quality and ensemble style has insured them many performances at famous French festivals.
But that’s the pleasant arrival of a young French female singer whose groove, sensibility an presence can leave no one indifferent, that brought the charm needed to the fulfillment of the dream. Her name is Laurence “Lo” Jay and she definitely represents the jewel of the band .As Georges H Buck Jr says, “Even Laurence sings the American Jazz standards in English with ease and swing even though English is not her native language.
Fred Dupin and Laurence Jay’s duet could evoke those as famous as Anita O`Day & Gene Krupa, Ella & Louis, Peggy Lee & Dave Barbour .Their strength and talent in common led them soon to the roots jazz!
Together in February 2003, they discovered the City of New Orleans and fell in love with her. From this discovery arose a plan which has now reality. The idea was to record their new CD here. So, from September 2004 on, the New Bumpers worked several months, rehearsing, arranging and composing until the day they left for the New Orleans, February 1. Among the musicians around the couple were Cyril Dubile, a Trombonist inspired by Jack Teagarden, Guillaume Nouaux , brilliant French drummer in the news, Alain Barrades, stride pianist and Frederic Lasnier , slap bassist.
But that is only the beginning of the adventure! let’s talk about Jacques Gauthe who came the summer before to France for some concert with the New Bumpers. Not only was a real friendship born between the French musicians and their guest, but also a musical complicity . That’s why Fred Dupin has decided to have him as a special guest on his next CD named (logically) “Trip to New Orleans”. But the dream was going on when Tim Laughlin joined the band without any hesitation after Fred asked him to insert four of his compositions into the album. And to crown it all, here came Duke Heitger, one of Fred’s Favorite trumpeters, Who agreed to be part of the experience. For a week the doors of New Orleans` best jazz clubs would be open to our young French jazz lovers for incredible sitting-in .
The CD stemming from such a wonderful adventure is now a big success Fred Dupin’s arrangement are a real treat for listeners` ears. A complete and dynamic repertoire with contrast, beautiful ballads such as a magical version of Hoagy.
Carmichael’s “Rockin’ Chair”, but also a surprising first vocal version of “Cassoulet Stomo” (a French meal with white beans, duck meat and sausage) How could we talk about Jacques without evoking food, his other passion. Anyway, has music ever gone without food for a French musician?
The new Things in this album are two songs composed by Guillaume Nouaux and written by Laurence Jay. Who would have guessed both of them were born in France? Fred Dupin really knew how to take advantage of the different talent he gathered for the event. Duke Heitger sings for the first time with Laurence …Lovely! Another duet...but this time with Fred Dupin …As many surprises a wonder!
Georges H Buck Jr, the head of Jazzology and GHB , Who was longing to have them in his catalog, said, “The New Bumpers Dixieland Jazz Band has truly achieved the authentic sound an feeling of New Orleans Jazz .this is proven by how easy the new Orleans Musicians were able to become part of the band as if they had player together for year.”
There is a nice future ahead for our French friends.
